Hawkes Bay is made up of two cities 20 kilometres apart - Napier, the Art Deco capital of New Zealand and Hastings, the Fruitbowl of New Zealand. Hawkes Bay is also a legendary wine producing area within New Zealand. The climate in Hawkes Bay is unique to New Zealand. Sheltered by ranges from the prevailing weather, the temperature in Hawkes Bay is most of the time 3-4 degrees hotter than anywhere else. This is why grapes for wine and fruit grows so well in Hawkes Bay. In 1933 Hawkes Bay suffered a large earthquake that wiped out a lot of the Hawkes Bay.
